Books That Will Make You Fall In Love With Reading (AGAIN!)

“I USED TO READ A TON, BUT I JUST CAN’T SEEM TO GET BACK INTO IT!”

Let’s be honest: being a dedicated reader every day of the year is tough. Sometimes finishing a book feels like finishing a reading assignment. You get one slow book, or you’re unable to get into the plot of one book after another, you pause on reading for a couple weeks….and all of a sudden you haven’t read in three months. It’s so much easier to reach for our phones and doom scroll, or to turn on Netflix (YES I’M STILL WATCHING!). There is a reason we keep our love of literature alive even in this era dominated my technology.  A book can be interpreted thousands of different ways and give each reader a unique experience or perspective. Here is a list of books for the next time you fall out of love with reading!

BEASTS OF EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCE BY RUTH EMMIE LANG

Lang writes a beautiful novel about the human experience that will have you swooning over her writing.  Weylyn Grey leads an isolated life while trying to deal with his ability to somewhat control the weather. Will his powers keep him apart from the one who’s always matter most…Mary? Told from the many perspectives of people who have crossed paths with Weylyn Grey, Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance weaves love and magic in this impressive debut novel.

GREENWOOD BY MICHAEL CHRISTIE

How this one is not a well known hit will always puzzle me. Greenwood is a sweeping family saga following a family of contradictions.  At once a family saga and a climate study, this novel follows the Greenwoods through 100 years in an effort to explain what we have done to get where we are now. The story moves quickly and will have you turning pages to connect the dots.

THE GIRL WITH THE LOUDING VOICE BY ABI DARÉ

An awe-inspiring story of Adunni, a Nigerian girl who grew up in a small village, and overcame poverty, illiteracy, and abuse, The Girl With The Louding Voice will have you falling in the love with the power of words all over again.  Adunni’s path is treacherous, but her strong attitude and perseverance will have you rooting for her every step of the way. This is one you will not want to miss!

THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY  BY MATT HAIG

The Midnight Library took the world by storm in late 2020. Desperate for a feel good and  comforting story, we ate this one up. Nora Seed is battling depression and on the cusp of committing suicide when she has the chance to relive her life according to the paths she did not take. If you could change it all, would you? Haig reminds us why we as readers explore the impossible through the written word.

THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE BY V.E. SCHWAB

Addie LaRue was born in France in 1714. Over 300 years later she is still dealing with the bargain she made. She will live forever, but no one will remember her. All of this changes at the hands of one young man.  One of my favorite books of all time, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue reminds us of the value of recording history and sets an atmospheric tone full of bookshops and novels.

THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO BY TAYLOR JENKINS REID

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo follows the life of a movie star from the 1950s to the present. We learn about her adventures, secrets, and many lovers through a coveted interview scored by journalist, Monique Grant. This book is a coming of age story, a mystery, a romance, a historical fiction, and a thriller — and man is it done right.

Next time you struggle to pick up a book, remember that ebbs and flows are normal in our reading lives. We are busy humans with children, school, responsibility, and careers. But when you’re ready, the literary world always has a spot for you.
